Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that his side can persist in handling with player absences after confirming that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

Havertz has been sidelined since August following knee surgery. Initially expected to be available earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when advancing his rehabilitation and could not progress “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is considerably steadier and has more options,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This news leaves a tactical puzzle for the midweek match against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position last weekend, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option following a lengthy absence.

Defensive Concerns Persist

More doubts affect defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in central defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta feels the £250m spend on squad depth in the last transfer window has placed the club in a far better place to handle such absences.

Greater Options Key to Title Challenge

When asked if a larger pool of players was helping their championship push, his response was positive. “Absolutely, since the current term has seen more issues in certain positions, and now the problems with the backline,” he added.

“History has shown us that we have to use players in different positions, and they must be capable to adapt to new tasks if we are to fight at the top. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star

Addressing the delay noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He could not go to the next level and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

Arteta expressed his eagerness to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I admire greatly for his contributions to the team, but his character, his personality. I see him suffer while sidelined.”

“His fitness history is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back around the team and playing because I think it’s going to be a huge lift.”
