Caelan Doris Included in Irish Team But Joe McCarthy Omitted
Returning manager the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy is absent.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to face New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the summer tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, back to national team duties after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is still available, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with the coach deciding not to selecting the province's Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only new name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's three league games this season and played in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city earlier this year.
McCarthy was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to cover for the captain should the captain does not regain fitness in time to face New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
