Football Association of Ireland Passes Resolution Urging Uefa Ban on Israeli Teams

Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to submit a official proposal to European football's governing body, demanding the exclusion of Israeli football from all European club and international competitions.

Basis of the Recommended Suspension

This motion, which was put forward by Dublin club Bohemians, highlighted claimed violations by the Israel Football Association of a couple of key European football regulations.

  • Failure to apply and uphold an effective policy against racism.
  • Organisation of clubs in occupied Palestinian territories without the consent of the Palestrian FA.

Ballot Results and Future Actions

As stated in an official statement from the FAI, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with seven against and 2 abstentions.

The association intends to officially present this motion to the UEFA's decision-making body, asking for the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.

In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to delegates. It was approved by a majority.

Earlier European Considerations

The European body had previously paused intentions to ban Israeli football at the close of last month, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the region.

Although they never publicly stated considering an special session on the matter, preparations were understood to be well developed.

Global Backdrop

This Irish resolution follows comparable demands in last autumn from the heads of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for banning Israel from international competition.

Those requests were issued after United Nations experts asked world and European football bodies to suspend the Israeli FA, referencing a UN investigation that claimed the country of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.

Israel has denied these claims and labeled the findings as outrageous.

Possible Ramifications

Should Uefa decide to ban Israel, it would probably create tension with the US administration – joint hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which strongly opposes such an action.

Although the European body has the authority to suspend Israeli teams from its tournaments, it may not be able to prevent them from taking part in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by Fifa.
