Major Online Service Executives Called to Testify Before U.S. Lawmakers Over User Radicalization
CEOs from a number of well-known digital services were formally invited to appear before a U.S. House committee concerning the increasing concern of user radicalization on their networks.
Lawmakers Demands Explanations on Online Content Moderation
Lawmakers have a responsibility to oversee the online platforms that radicals have used to promote violent acts," commented the panel head in a recent statement. "To prevent future extremism and harm, these CEOs must appear and explain what measures they will take."
Hearing Scheduled for October
Letters have been delivered to the leaders of the respective company requesting their appearance on October 8. This session will look into the radicalization of online forum users, covering examples of direct calls to commit violent acts.
Recent Incident Prompted Lawmaker Response
The request was prompted by the recent shooting of a conservative political activist last week. The suspect is said to have used a certain of these services to talk about the attack afterward and was reportedly steeped in online meme culture.
Past of Radical Use on Gaming Platforms
Although being gaming platforms, these companies have long served as gathering points for radical groups to organize, communicate, and harass others. Previous events such as white supremacist gatherings and mass shootings were reportedly planned using these platforms. An earlier study also pointed out that one service was “rife with extremism and antisemitism.
Upcoming Hearing Format
The executives will be given the opportunity to deliver brief opening statements before answering questions from representatives of the panel during the October hearing.
