Novak Djokovic Issues Warning to Jannik Sinner: Doping Ban Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"
The tennis star has warned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will linger over his career like a "cloud" – while also questioning the timing of the penalty in the previous season.
The Ban Explained
Sinner completed a three-month prohibition in February 2025 after the World Anti-Doping Agency accepted his explanation that a banned anabolic steroid, the steroid clostebol, had been ingested unintentionally.
"That cloud will follow him just as the Covid controversy will follow me, for the rest of his, or my career," the champion remarked in a discussion on Piers Morgan: Uncensored.
"It is a situation where, it was so significant, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will always try to bring that forward."
The Champion's Viewpoint
Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "had no intentional involvement", but he then scrutinized how the player arranged to serve his time without sitting out any major tournaments.
"There is the lack of transparency, the inconsistency, the convenient timing of the suspension coming between the slams, so he doesn't miss out the others – it's just it was very, very odd," Djokovic added.
Broader Tennis Community Response
"I really don't like how the situation was managed and you could hear so many other players, both male and female, who had comparable circumstances voicing their concerns publicly and asserting it represented favorable handling."
