The Leading Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Spot.

On the surface, this album could seem closer to a challenging university challenge than a new pop record by an artist whose previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Broken across 4 distinct movements and voiced in thirteen languages, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced album investigating feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, often through the perspective of various female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among an extensive list of contributors. Its sheer daring alone makes the work of other pop stars appear quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to avoid overly intellectual posturing is nearly a miracle, with full praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and the present, its ambitions feel far greater here, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. The element that really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, is an essential spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener up in its tornado. When she is breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless want to stay right there for the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

That exuberant energy shines clearly on a stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Then, everything falls silent, and there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top string crescendo thuds down with comedic force. The song immediately shifts to the frenetic track featuring racing strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—nor wish to know—what it is going to next."

Almost every track concludes at a completely different point from where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic style starts out moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of the album is navigating the gap of radical innovation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that the album has become the artist's first work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in English swells around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging melodies while it spirals upward. This feat gets echoed on another powerful ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other major releases of the year felt like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flit between conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
