This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
