The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has resigned as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This follows a court battle that invalidated her legal standing to serve.
Acceptance of Resignation
The head of the Justice Department, Pam Bondi, confirmed the prosecutor's departure on Monday. She commented that the court's "flawed" ruling made it impossible for her to perform her duties.
"But do not mistake compliance for surrender," she wrote. "This battle will now extend throughout the country."
Legal Background
Her resignation was triggered by a federal appellate panel ruled that she had been serving in violation of the law as the top prosecutor. This ruling is likely to affect numerous criminal cases in the Garden State.
The judicial panel said that a temporary posting that skirted Senate approval breached the federal law governing appointments.

Bondi said that the former prosecutor will stay on at the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. Habba plans to challenge the decision of the court's action, in the hope of achieving a reversal.
