Weather Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Closed Vilnius Airport
Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
